FARAD S.A. participates in a project on development of an autonomous fuel change system from HFO to MGO for ships

FARAD S.A proudly announces that it participates in a project on “Study, design and development of an innovative, autonomous and automated fuel change system from HFO to MGO for ships”.

The scope of the project concerns research in relation to the design and construction of an innovative, autonomous and automated automatic fuel change system from HFO to ΜGO for ships. This need exists as recently enacted shipping regulations gradually prohibit the use of classic heavy oil (HFO) in many sea areas. Due to its high sulphur and heavy metal content, ships performing HFO marine combustion emit large amounts of air pollutants and are therefore a major environmental issue worldwide.

Aim of the project

The aim of the project is the study, design and construction of a system that will meet all the specific requirements of the shipping industry and classification societies and will be able to automatically undertake the fuel change from HFO to MGO when the ship is at sea. A refrigeration unit will cool the MGO to the appropriate temperature and a series of automated “change over valves” will undertake in cooperation with the unit the smooth transition of fuel from HFO to MGO without interrupting the operation of the ship’s engine.

Project results

As an immediate expected result, is the construction of a prototype system (cooling unit and automated valve) which will be able to automatically undertake the fuel change from HFO to MGO when the ship is at sea. This will be done using the best way in terms of mixing and fuel change time, without stressing the engine and the ship’s systems.

Industrial and economic benefits: Contribution to the technology sector of oil heat and cooling (MGO) by offering new products that are more efficient, lower cost and with a smaller energy footprint. The know-how that will be acquired and the production of knowledge will consolidate the position of Marine Enterprises in the shipping market. Companies will be able to develop new or improved products, with high added value while at the same time improving their productivity and competitiveness. This will make it possible for them to penetrate new markets. At the same time, new jobs will be created and sales – exports of companies will increase on a global scale.

Benefits at research and technological level: The proposed alternator product, for the first time at research and industrial level, will incorporate functionality and automation that will include utilization of ship engine mode parameters, ship geolocation with GPS data that will automate the transition from HFO fuel to MGO with the approach to an ECA (Emission Control Areas) zone. This functionality and approach is an innovation in international level as to date there are no corresponding systems that have such an approach.

Social benefits: In recent years, environmental protection has been a subject of concern around the world. Specific energy policies are implemented globally aimed at spreading “green” practices in the industrial sector. This product will ultimately offer benefits in environmental protection and will contribute towards “Green Ship” technologies.
